Essien Hails Crucial Win

Michael Essien has told skysports.com how important Chelsea’s win over Liverpool was.

The Ghana star played a pivotal role in the 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

And Essien thinks taking three points against Liverpool was essential for Chelsea’s title hopes.

“A game against Liverpool is always difficult, they are one of the main title contenders so it is good to win against them,” he told skysports.com.

“To take three points from them is very good.

“The game was hard but taking three points was a must because Manchester United lost two points at home on Saturday night.

“It is a good day for us and that will give us confidence for the rest of the title run-in.

“Last season we did not do well against them so it is good to let them know we mean business this season.”

Ancelotti – Blues Not Invincible

Carlo Ancelotti has rejected suggestions that Chelsea can go through the entire Premier League campaign without defeat.

The Italian has made an outstanding start to his Stamford Bridge career, guiding those in a chelsea shirt to six successive league victories to set the pace at the top of the table.

London rivals Arsenal made history in 2003/04 when they lifted the title after not suffering a single league loss, with Arsene Wenger’s squad earning the nickname ‘Invincibles’.

Ancelotti has ruled out matching the Gunners’ feat, while he admitted that his knowledge of Serie A has helped him make the transition to England’s top flight.

Good teams

He said: “Things are going very well for us but I know we will not win every game this season.

“There are too many good teams in the Premier League to remain unbeaten all season so now it is important to maintain this level for as long as we can.

“There are a lot of Italian managers doing well in England and I think that is because we come from such a good school.

“There are a lot of different systems in the Italian championship and you have to think a lot about how to beat teams.

“Italian coaches have a lot of knowledge of defensive play and I think this helps us.”

Pressure

Ancelotti has earned a reputation as one of the most respected managers in the game, but revealed that he came close to the axe just seven games into his very first post.

He added: “I started as a manager at Reggiana in 1995 and after seven games we were bottom of the Italian Second Division without a single win.

“I really thought I was going to get the sack. Our next game was against Venezia and I knew that it would be the end for me if we lost.

“In Italy, it is normal for a coach to think that every game could be his last when things don’t go well.

“The pressure in Italy is much worse than here in England, from the fans, the directors and from the Press. Only last week my friend Angelo Gregucci was sacked at Atalanta after four games.

“Fortunately at Reggiana, we won our next game, 3-0 against Venezia, and we went on to win promotion that season.”

Malouda Wary of Competition

Florent Malouda is aware that he faces intense competition to retain a place in Chelsea’s first team, but the winger believes he is close to his best form.

The Frenchman began to show evidence at the end of last season that he had finally settled in England following a £13.5million move from Lyon in 2007.

Malouda has carried those good performances into the current campaign as the boys in chelsea football shirts have made a 100 per cent start to the 2009/10 Premier League.

But ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wigan, the 30-year-old acknowledges that a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s first XI is not guaranteed.

“Every player who joins Chelsea knows there will be competition,” Malouda said in the Evening Standard.

“When you have ambitions to go far in every competition you must have a strong squad so there is naturally competition and everybody is ready for that.

“That’s our job and we train hard to prove to the manager we deserve to play and to make sure we stay in the team.”

Chelsea vs QPR Match Report

Salomon Kalou’s goal earned Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers in an enthralling Carling Cup tie.

Joe Cole and Yuri Zhirkov both started for the Blues as manager Carlo Ancelotti rung the changes and it was the England international who set up Kalou in the 52nd minute.

QPR created chances but were unable to find an equaliser as Chelsea continued their excellent start to the season.

It was Cole’s evening after eight months out with ruptured cruciate knee ligaments, a problem he aggravated in July’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Cole was playing in the hole and showing no signs of his injury affecting his approach. He matched Wayne Routledge for pace in the early stages and later in the first half he danced around Routledge and Akos Buzsaky before Martin Rowlands brought him down.

When Paulo Ferreira, also returning from a long-term knee problem, crossed from the right 10 minutes before the break, Cole was on the end of it but stabbed wide of Tom Heaton’s goal.

That was a rare bright moment in a dull opening 45 minutes although Juliano Belletti, just before the whistle, smashed a 30-yard free-kick and Heaton tipped over the crossbar.

The other clear-cut chance of the first half dropped to Fabio Borini, one of Frank Arnesen’s youngsters who was making his first start for the club.

With Fifa having imposed a transfer ban on Chelsea for two windows, this was meant to be the clash to show what youngsters sporting director Arnesen had unearthed for Ancelotti to utilise.

Chelsea vs QPR Preview

Chelsea’s Carling Cup campaign gets underway on Wednesday when QPR come to Stamford Bridge in the third round of the competition.

The Blues have yet to play in this season’s competition due to their European commitments while the Rs have already eliminated Exeter and Accrington.

Chelsea are looking to win the Carling Cup for the third time in six seasons, while they were famously knocked out by Burnley last season at home on penalties.

Carlo Ancelotti is boosted by the availability of Joe Cole and Yuri Zhirkov, the latter making his debut in a chelsea shirt following his summer move from CSKA Moscow.

England international Cole has been sidelined since January because of a ruptured knee ligament which required surgery while Zhirkov is fit again following a knee injury.

Chelsea are likely to rest regulars Ricardo Carvalho, Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba. Drogba was taken off against Spurs with a calf stain, although the injury is not as serious as initially feared.

Salomon Kalou is almost certain to start in attack while Juliano Belletti could come in for Jose Bosingwa at right-back.

Blues youngsters Sam Hutchinson, Fabio Borini and Jeffrey Bruma will be in the squad, however, it remains to be seen whether they are given the nod by Ancelotti.

Chelsea Ready for Tottenham showdown

Capital rivals Chelsea and Tottenham go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.  Both sides have made bright starts to the current campaign and will be keen to maintain that momentum in their latest outing.

The Blues have won all five of their Premier League fixtures so far, and sit top of the table, while Spurs’ 3-1 defeat to Manchester United last time out was their first setback of the season.

Carlo Ancelotti certainly seems to have eased into his role at Chelsea, with the Italian yet to taste anything other than success this term – with a 1-0 victory over Porto in the UEFA Champions League in midweek prolonging his record.

He has helped to build on the solid foundations laid by interim coach Guus Hiddink last term and has those wearing a chelsea shirt well placed for a title push.

The men from West London also continue to be an awesome proposition on home soil, going 13 games unbeaten in front of their own supporters since Arsenal took three points in November 2008.

The omens do not look good for Spurs, as they have failed to win any of their last 19 games at Stamford Bridge.

They have also failed to beat any of the ‘Big Four’ away from home since overcoming Liverpool at Anfield way back in 1993.

Tottenham have also kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League trips out on the road.

Harry Redknapp does, however, have a striker in Jermain Defoe who is in red-hot form, with the diminutive frontman bagging eight goals in 11 starts for Spurs since making his return to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth.
